South African Brand Spotlight: 1966 Artisanal Rum Punch

1966 Artisanal Rum Punch

1966 Rum Punch is a complex and layered return to the African continent. Ajani Husbands, a former diplomat and attorney, founded the artisanal rum punch brand.

Husbands came up with the idea for the South African-based brand after noticing that the cultural significance given to rum in Barbados and other Caribbean islands was lacking in other parts of the world.

Husbands, who was born in the United States to Bajan parents, felt compelled to enter the rum business.

After leaving the corporate world, he began experimenting with various recipes, paying tribute to the traditional Bajan rum his mother used to make.

Husbands eventually started the crafting process for 1966 at a black-owned distillery in South Africa. 1966 was born from a deep desire to tell the story of traditional rum—and to highlight the significant role that black people played in its development.

The aroma of this splendid Barbados-style rum is distinct and easily identifiable. Instead of the strong aroma and harsh taste that is often associated with traditional rum punches, 1966 provides a clean and refreshing kick with fresh notes of nutmeg and a crisp hint of citrus.

1966 is an authentic, opulent Barbados-style rum punch made with traditional Bajan ingredients and craftsmanship, giving it a smooth, rich and spicy taste.

1966 is named after Barbados' independence year, representing timelessness, tradition, and culture. Traditional flavours and methods are combined with a modern twist, as well as contemporary, bold, clean branding.

Husbands wanted to create a rum punch that represents Barbados and honoured his family heritage. The result, 1966: Artisanal Rum Punch, which Ajani describes as the "ideal nexus point" for introducing consumers to the complexities and rich cultural heritage of rum.

1966 is bottled and distilled in South Africa, but its heart and soul are rooted in Barbados. Its distinct, refreshing, and clean flavour is both memorable and invigorating.

1966 is a true representation of a culturally significant brand, with Barbados at the heart and Africa at the soul of the brand.

1966 began with a love of Bajan rum and its rich cultural heritage. It continues with new ideas, paying homage to the past while establishing a strong identity for this modern adaptation of traditional Bajan rum. The brand highlights the exquisite, rich and complex nature of the popular Bajan beverage while educating consumers on the history, heritage and cultural significance of rum.
